This book is about a group of pilgrims, travelling to the frontier planet Hyperion on a pilgrimage to the deadly Shrike. On their trip, each tells why they are making the pilgrimage. I enjoyed the book until the last pilgrim's story. The plot was set up so this story was supposed to explain a lot of things. However, I recognized the story as being a short story I'd read on its own quite a while ago. At that point, the novel just collapsed into a belabored retelling of the Canterbury Tales for me.
